Frogs and a "freebie"

Before we began our study on frogs we brainstormed what we knew.  We then read our Scholastic News and watched a BrainPop show on frogs.  After this we were able to identify misconceptions and a few new facts along with vocabulary to begin our day!

While in the Daily Five Writing rotation the students wrote about frogs using facts from their Scholastic News as well as using their Can, Have, Are graphic organizer.

In the Word Work rotation students worked on ABC order with the vocabulary words and then using those words in a sentence and a question.

Our computer rotation was all about frogs.  More facts, reading and games.

Finally and our favorite we read and sang about Five Green and Speckled Frogs.  Each student created a frog to hang in our room.
If you like these ideas "hop" on over to TpT or Teacher's Notebook for the complete packet and a "freebie" "freebie"!

Yesterday in Ohio it was in the 70's.  Those of us from the Midwest can appreciate the miracle of that.  Well in first grade it was a blessing as we grabbed our bottles of bubbles and headed out for some "scientific investigation".  This was the conclusion to our Matter Unit which can be found at my TpT store.  Enjoy the video!

A Muddy Freebie!

What better time of year than now for a "muddy treat".  We read a wonderful story by Mary Lyn Ray called Mud and then all week we have been looking closely at different soils and working with "mud".  Today we made an edible mud and then we used our imagination.  What would a worm, teacher, mom, child say about mud?  Great fun and adorable answers!

Leprechaun Letters and Treats!

Each day this week the leprechaun has left the class a note and a little treat!
The leprechaun here is an idea from Glyph Girls and the Skittles from Cupcake for Teacher.

Each letter is so much fun to write and always stresses that the leprechaun dislikes noise.
Ha!  A great strategy for a quiet classroom as every child hopes to sneak a peak of the leprechaun.

Today the leprechaun left the supplies to make these cute treats.
Easy and mmmmmmmm!!
They can be put in a baggie to take home.

All is green and a "freebie"!

Okay so things are looking GREEN and my students are hoping the leprechaun will be seen!  My favorite is the bulletin  board with my student's pictures.  LUV it 'cause it stays up all year and all I do is change the title and focal point such as:  Lucky Me, Sweethearts, Thankful For, Flaky Friends.  So simple and so cute.  The same is true of the wreath on my door.  Change the ribbon and add some pencils.  It is a "warm welcome" to all who stop by. And if you are looking for a "freebie" or activities for St. Patrick's Day stop by here. I know you won't be sorry. Click Here

and Seuss goes on...and a muddie "freebie!

So we are continuing Dr. Seuss this week because last week we had to complete our Tall Tale Unit.
Today we read Oobleck and made the "messy" stuff to enhance our Matter Unit on how things change.  We also created some cute Cat in The Hat characters as well as wrote about the creative hat we made for last Friday's Hat Day.
I'm so excited!!
It was also a good day because I found someone to sit down with me to teach me about this blogging stuff.

And I have been busy creating items to meet the Common Core Standards.  I just posted the following things:  Research It, April Calendar and so much more..., April Vocabulary Cards and a Muddie "freebie"!!
